Members of the family Acanthuridae have oval or disc shaped bodies, edged with long-based doral and anal fins. The head has a steeply rising forehead with the eyes mounted high up. The aptly named surgeonfishes carry on erectile scalpel on each side of the caudalm peduncle, which can be used offensively or defensively.
Member of this gorup are usually active during daylight hours and mostly herbivorous, requiring a good proportion of vegetable matter in their diet. most are intolerant of their own kind, especially of those of similar colours and shapes.
The popular name of "tang" is likely to be an abbreviation of the German word "seetang", meaning seaweed. This reflects the fishes' fondness of consuming large quantities of algae and kelp as its natural diet.
